Planning a Visit to Blackdown? Here Are 6 Local Gems to Make a Day (or Two) of It
If you’re travelling to see our huts in our show garden in person, why not make the most of your visit? Nestled on the Somerset–Devon border, Blackdown Shepherd Huts is surrounded by rolling countryside, charming villages, coastlines, and cosy pubs that are well worth exploring. Whether you’re here for inspiration, a hut in the making, or simply a day out, here are six nearby places we think you’ll love – perfect for turning your trip into a memorable little escape maybe.
Have lunch at The Cotley Inn, Wambrook
Just a short drive from us, The Cotley Inn is everything you want from a countryside pub. It’s cosy, welcoming, and packed with flavour. Tucked away in the tiny village of Wambrook, it’s an award-winning gem that champions local produce and seasonal dishes. Whether you fancy a hearty roast, a light lunch in the garden (maybe a pizza from their garden shack in the summer), or a pint by the fire, it’s a favourite with both locals and visitors alike (and the views are pretty lovely too).
Go fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast
Stretch your legs and your imagination with a trip to the Jurassic Coast – a World Heritage Site packed with prehistoric wonders. About half an hour away from Blackdown, the beaches around Charmouth and Lyme Regis are known for their rich fossil beds. It’s a great outing, whether you’re beachcombing, joining a guided fossil walk, or just soaking up the sea air with fish and chips in hand. You could also head further along the coast to Chesil beach to see the tidal lagoon. Just don’t forget your camera.
Farm shop stop off
If you’re travelling to us via the A303, Teals near Wincanton makes a brilliant stop-off. With a farm shop, deli, café and lifestyle store set in peaceful surroundings, it’s a lovely spot to stretch your legs, grab a bite, and stock up on treats before coming to us, or indeed heading home. Their bread selection is fabulous.
Take a stroll on the famous Cobb at Lyme Regis
While you’re by the coast, don’t miss the chance to wander along the iconic Cobb at Lyme Regis. This curving harbour wall, made famous by The French Lieutenant’s Woman and also featuring more recently in Wonka, offers sweeping views out to sea and a glimpse into the town’s rich maritime past. It’s an atmospheric spot – perfect for a slow stroll, a few photos, or just watching the boats go by. You’ll find two difference beaches to enjoy, one side of the Cobb is a sandy option, the other side is the pebbled Monmouth beach where dogs can run freely all year round.
Treat yourself to Otter Valley ice cream!
On a sunny afternoon (or let’s be honest – any afternoon), a stop at Otter Valley Ice Cream is a must. Family-run and full of charm, their café serves up generous scoops of homemade ice cream, all crafted from Devonshire milk. With classic and creative flavours to choose from – plus a lovely spot to sit and take in the views – it’s a sweet little detour you won’t regret.
Stay at Dimpsey Glamping and try a Blackdown hut for real
If you’re tempted by the idea of hut living, why not stay in one? Dimpsey Glamping is just a stone’s throw away from us and offers the chance to experience a luxury Blackdown hut firsthand. Nestled in peaceful countryside, it’s a restful, romantic spot to unwind, complete with wood-fired hot tubs, crackling fires, and thoughtful details throughout. A perfect way to round off your trip in style.
