We recently had so much fun styling one of our show garden Blackdown Turnkey huts with a 70’s vibe. The bright patterns, retro decor, and nostalgic touches brought back memories of a time when bold choices defined not just fashion but food as well. The 1970s was more than just a decade of disco fever and flared trousers—it was also an era filled with unique food trends that brought people together, creating a shared experience around meals and snacks.
Let’s take a stroll down memory lane and revisit some of the iconic flavors and dining moments that defined the era.
Fondue Parties
Who could forget the social excitement of a fondue party? The experience was just as important as the food itself. Guests would gather around a simmering pot, skewers in hand, ready to dip bread, veggies, or fruit into a pot of warm, gooey cheese or velvety chocolate. It was the epitome of 1970s entertainment: communal, interactive, and always a little messy in the best possible way.
Jelly Moulds
Every family event or potluck seemed to feature an elaborate Jelly mould. Brightly coloured and often set with fruit (or sometimes even vegetables!), these wobbly desserts brought a sense of fun to any spread. The artistry behind some of these creations was impressive, turning simple gelatin into showpieces that kids and adults alike couldn’t wait to dig into.
TV Dinners
The convenience of TV dinners was a revelation for the UK in the 70’s. These meals made life easier for busy families and created a sense of novelty, even if the choices were limited initially. They became a symbol of modern living and brought the excitement of dining right into the living room, perfect for an evening of watching your favourite sitcoms. Ahhhhh. The Good Life….
Pineapple & Cheese on a Stick
A true relic of the era’s love for sweet and savoury combinations, pineapple chunks paired with cubes of Cheddar on cocktail sticks made for a quirky yet beloved party snack. Often served sticking out of a half grapefruit imitating a hedgehog (we were told) or as part of a vibrant appetiser platter, these bite-sized delights brought colour and fun to any table.
Angel Delight & Instand Puddings
Desserts in the 1970s were simple yet satisfying. Enter Angel Delight and other instant puddings—a quick mix that turned into a fluffy, sweet treat that families loved. The butterscotch and strawberry flavours were especially popular, creating a soft, cloud-like finish to any meal without much fuss. It was comfort food at its finest, served with a dollop of whipped cream or simply enjoyed as is.
These food memories not only nourish a sense of nostalgia but also highlight a time when dining was about connection and creativity. Whether you were dipping into a fondue pot with friends, marveling at the perfect set of a Jelly mould, or enjoying a cosy TV dinner, the flavours of the 1970s were uniquely charming and full of character – just like our huts.
